Kelsey Scholer Tutoring Session #1
Thursday evening, I met with Cassie, my tutee. Prior to this session, we discussed that she would like to focus on speaking and I wanted to learn more about her personal and academic life. We began by introducing ourselves and talking about where we are from. Then, I referred to the Needs Assessment handout to ask questions about her level of English. I could already tell that she is very advanced in her English. She makes some grammatical mistakes, but knows when to correct herself. She told me that she is very interested in vocabulary, but doesn't think it's as useful as other skills such a listening and speaking. She asked me about the culture in the US because she only came here about 2 months ago. Specifically, she asked about celebrations and we talked about how they are different than in her hometown in Taiwan. She found it strange that sometimes, we allow strangers (friends of friends) to come to our parties because she usually only hangs out with people she already knows. I found this first tutoring session to be very informative for both of us. She practiced her conversational speaking as she had hoped, and I learned how I can help her as a tutor in future sessions. I am excited for more tutoring sessions with her.
This was most interesting to read about Cassie's views on uninvited party guests.
