Adrianna CO#3
This past Wednesday (the 30th), I observed a Group 2A listening class taught by Patrick Kennell who was substituting for Hunter Pelt. Right off the bat, I really enjoyed Professor Kennell's enthusiasm and his methods of interacting with the students. After having some class discussion about just the general challenges of learning American English, he talked about the importance of incorporating music into lesson plans and how helpful it can be when learning a new language. He asked the students to pick a song (they chose one by Shawn Mendes), and then he played the music video with closed captions on. He would pause the video repeatedly, and ask the students what they thought a specific lyric meant, such as "she pulls me in". I think that this method is a fantastic way to teach students not only basic American English, but also the many idioms found in the language.
