Class Observation #3
Reading 1A with Dr. Derrick Pollock
Today I observed the Reading 1A class with Dr. Derrick Pollock. There were only two students in the class so the teacher modified the lesson from what he had planned. The first activity was for one student to stand with their back to the board and have another student describe the vocabulary word on the board to the first student without using it. I noticed that the words were slightly above their level. This reflects the i+1 theory. Then, Dr. Pollock did an extensive reading activity where he read a level-appropriate novel to the students as they followed along. This seemed to interest them. Something that I took note of is that he would stop and review the past few paragraphs for comprehension. I think this is a great way to teach them strategies for reading comprehension and to check that they are following along. Then, he moved on to a reading skills lesson. They were learning about context clues. He referred to the textbook and read the concept of context clues slowly and clearly. He then looked at examples and had the students find the context clues. This was a helpful way to teach them a new skill.
